Biographical Notes
Jim Forest's religious career has been more varied and fascinating than most. At twelve he was baptised into the Episcopal church in his home parish of Shrewsbury, New Jersey; at 19 whilst in the US Navy he converted to Catholicism and obtained a discharge on the grounds of conscientious objection. He then joined the Catholic Worker Community in New York with Dorothy Day and edited the community's Newspaper. Many years of religious journalism and an increasing commitment to peacework and reconciliation followed.
Between 1969-1970 he was imprisoned for thirteen months for his involvement in burning draft papers as a protest against the Vietnam war.
In 1988 both he and his wife Nancy joined the Russian Orthodox Church and he is currently the editor of the quarterly Orthodox journal Communion and secretary of the Orthodox Peace fellowship. He lives in the Netherlands.
